In an effort to compete with prepaid cell phone companies like Cricket and MetroPCS, Boost Mobile will soon unveil a new unlimited nationwide calling plan for $50. This is a flat-rate plan and will not include an “extra” charges like roaming, voicemail, activation charges, long distance charges, or overage fees.
This is a bold move by Boost and an attempt to keep younger prepaid phone users who may be tempted to switch to other big wireless providers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile (which is often seen as a value prepaid provider). Cricket and MetroPCS offer geographically limited plans for about $10 more–so the fact that this new Boost plan is nationwide could be a very good thing for many cell phone users across the country.
The Boost “Monthly Unlimited” plan, which will be released on January 22, offers service in 15,800 US cities with “unlimited anytime calling, text messaging, wireless Web and walkie-talkie services with a national calling area for $50 a month.” That pretty much covers everything.
Boost, which operates on the Nextel National Network, claims to have four times less dropped calls than Cricket and half as many dropped calls at SprintPCS (based on independent testing). Subscribers to this new service will get the following: unlimited Talking, unlimited text, unlimited walkie-talkie, unlimited web browsing, and nationwide coverage with no extra charges.
Unlimited text messaging and web browsing? With no contract? Seriously? This could be a very good deal.
