Learning to Use Prepaid Cell Phones

Prepaid cell phones are a great way to save money on your phone bill, but as I have written before, they are not right for everyone. This is something you need to know going into your next cell phone purchase decision.

Prepaid options work for certain types of people and don’t work for certain types of people. Rather, I should say they make sense for people with certain talk habits. There is a rule of thumb that if you use 300 minutes or less, then a good choice for your mobile communication needs is prepaid.

People who talk a lot on their phones, continually keeping up with their friends, texting, surfing the web frequently, and generally living on their mobile device will not save money on prepaid as a general rule. However, you may want to have a look at the Boost Mobile unlimited monthly plan, which offers unlimited data usage, text, and talk time. This is a very recent development and is very competitive with somewhat similar offers from big wireless providers like AT&T.

If you are, however, a light user of your cell phone, then you will most likely do better with a prepaid phone. Those who use their handsets extremely sparingly can get away with paying as low as $10 per month on some plans. T-Mobile prepaid has some good offers for the “value” customer who is interested in keeping their phone bills down. Tracfone, likewise, is another “no-frills” carrier that has the potential to save a goodly amount of money for you and your family.

Learning to use pay as you go phones is not necessarily the best way to put it, but what I mean to say is you need to understand that there are certain users who will benefit from this kind of service and others who will not.  It really is all a question of phone habits.  It could be a good idea for you to switch to prepaid as a way to save money, because honestly every penny helps these days.  But it is not worth changing anything if you are going to end up paying more than you would on a contract plan because you use a lot more minutes or data than you expected.

If you make the change, then you need to adapt to the way prepaid cell phone plans work.  If you do, you will see how great this type of service can be and how much control you have over your monthly bill.  Many people swear by prepaid service, while other have mixed reviews.  It really is a personal thing and every person’s experience is different.  As more and more people move over to prepaid plans, the advantages will become more evident.
