Cell Phone Industry Goes Green – How Soon?

Will the cell phone industry ever go green?  Wouldn’t that be cool?  Nokia, which sold two out of three cell phones purchased last year, will be the company leading the charge toward energy efficiency and environmental friendliness in cell phones.

Motorola released the MOTO W233 Renew in the U.S.  This phone model is made from from recycled water bottles and can itself be recycled when its life is over.  This is definitely something the cell phone industry needs to be concerned about, especially as many prepaid phones are described as being disposable.  This type of thing creates a lot of waste.  The handset is available for $9.99 with a two-year contract.  Another cool thing is that Motorola will pay for the carbon offset of the phone, making the phone carbon neutral.

In order for a move to a more “green” wireless industry, handset manufacturers need to work on making this type of thing attractive in terms of cost, which is where most decisions are made in cell phone purchases.  This is what industry experts say is the biggest concern and probably the biggest facilitator if the industry is going to shift.

It’s time for every industry to work on making products more recyclable.  We’re running out of space.
