One way to know when a story is hot is to see how often the Associated Press writes about it. The AP is a news report service that funnels stories to publications all over the world. Yesterday, there were two stories about prepaid cell phones. These are the original stories that are now either being reprinted or parroted by websites all over the place.
The bottom line is that pay as you go cell phones are hot right now, as is anything that can save people money. It’s a struggle out there and people the country over are learning how to make due with less. Slowly, luxuries are being cut out of the budget and many people are turning to their cell phone bills to cut some expenses out of daily life.
This article, titled 5 Things to Know about Prepaid Phones, covers a few facts that I’ve written about here before, but it’s a good refresher course for those in the market for a good prepaid cell phone offer. The fist thing is that some prepaid plans have pricey fees, like the new Verizon Wireless “Unlimited” plan, which comes with a pretty high daily fee of around two or three dollars no matter how little (or how much) you use your phone on a given day.
The article goes so far as to suggest that for the most savings, you may want to ditch your landline and go all in on prepaid or to use your prepaid phone for outgoing calls and your landline for incoming. Essentially, these days you want to be smart about how you use any of your phone lines.
Prepaid phones are a more viable option these days for many people, especially as attitudes about this kind of wireless plan are changing as consumer awareness becomes greater. The market is saturated with monthly contract plans, but there are many more options for cellular customers.
This article is a very good overview of how prepaid cell phones work, how to get one, and some of the misconceptions that wireless customers have. For example, many people think they have to pay a termination fee to get out of their contract, when sometimes it may be possible to switch to a prepaid plan within the same network with no payment. Others believe they will have to change their phone number which is not the case. It also goes into how people save money with pay as you go plans and gives some factual evidence.
