Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg commented a few weeks ago that the Sprint iDEN network can’t handle the demand of Boost Mobile’s Unlimited plan. Turns out he might not be too far off.
While the network hasn’t quite blown up yet, several issues with the service have been reported in several markets over the past week or so. We reported the text message delivery issue here on our blog earlier, and now Dallas/Forth Worth in Texas are reporting various issues, because the service is so popular.

Apparently, they added 4x more subscribers than they expected to, and they simply weren’t ready to do so, it appears.
The central issue, according to various reports circulating around the web: Boost Unlimited customers receive the “lowest access priority available on the iDEN network.” The solution has been to raise those customers to the same priority as a normal Nextel customer, and Boost will work to be able to bring things back to normal.
It’ll be curious to see how Boost handles the popularity of their prepaid cell phones, and whether they’ll have to pour cash into improving their network to permanently handle the issues.
Another wireless provider really picking up steam in a market completely different than Boost Mobile is Jitterbug. While Boost caters to a younger crowd that practically lives through their cell phones, Jitterbug is a prepaid option for older users who don’t want any of the trappings of overbearing technology. They just want to be able to pick up their wireless phone and talk–and that’s it!
