Taxes, Outdated Laws, and You: IRS wants old cell phone law repealed

cell-phoneBack in the old days (circa 1989 or so), cell phones were a huge luxury and were actually called “car phones”. The government actually passed a law taxing those that used cell phones for business and personal needs, and the law was murky, poorly written and certainly doesn’t fit in with today’s unlimited talk, prepaid cell phones, and ease of access society.

The Obama administration and the IRS wants the law to be repealed/rewritten to be clearer, and to not treat cell phones as luxury items (and be taxed accordingly), and we couldn’t agree more. Several attempts to repeal this law have stalled, but this time there’s a bill that has a chance to pass coming to the Senate.

There are still many laws on the books that forbid fairly common activities that were written many moons ago, when society and the world at large was quite different, and we hope this tax law goes to the antique heap where it belongs.
