Tracfone Launches SafeLink Prepaid Phones as Emergency Link

Safelink is a program that Tracfone (read about Tracfone promotional codes) has been initiating in about 17 states, including Georgia, in order to distribute the Lifeline program which is meant to provide cell phone use to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Safelink and Lifelink are not meant to be handouts and are not permamanent.  Rather, the two programs (which you can read about in more detail below) are meant to help people get on their feet and become more connected to the community.  The idea is that cell phone use should be not just a luxury but a right due to the prevalence in society of cell phones and the dependence we place on them in our daily lives.

Tracfone and Safelink’s aim is to give people the opportunity to receive a callback after a job interview or to have a cell phone in case of emergency.  An added bonus for Tracfone is that it may gain some continued or future customers who can afford its services later down the line when economic fortunes change.

This excerpt is from this article about the Tracfone SafeLink program.

To qualify, participants must be assisted by another state or federal program, such as federal public housing assistance, food stamps or Medicaid, or have a household income below poverty guidelines set by the state or federal government. The program offers a free cell phone, 68 minutes of talking time monthly and features such as voicemail, texting, call waiting, caller ID and some international calling.

Lifeline is funded by the Federal Communications Commission and Universal Service Fund through fees that all telecommunications carriers are required to pay each year.

This program is primarily for emergency phone service and the minutes do roll over from month to month, which is a plus.
