Will Tracfone’s Straight Talk Unlimited Prepaid Service Kill the Competition

Tracfone recently released an unlimited prepaid wireless plan under the name Straight Talk. The $45 monthly rate that Tracfone plans to charge, as well as its use of the strong Verizon network to provide nationwide coverage has other industry leaders worried.

Or at least it should. It is not exactly clear where the Tracfone Straight Talk Unlimited plan will go, but it is here for now. Things could change in its agreement with Verizon, it may not catch on, or the terms of the plan could change. For now though, it’s looking like Tracfone may have heated up a price war that may have really kicked off when Boost Mobile unveiled its Monthly Unlimited plan for $50.

Boost Mobile has however historically been hampered by its network coverage and there were some issues early on with text messaging. There were always questions as to whether or not Boost could support the likely spike in subscribers. Tracfone theoretically should have no problems with this considering it is backed by the strength of the Verizon network.

This is quite an aggressive move by Tracfone, and not only targets other lower-end prepaid cell phone providers like Boost and MetroPCS, but also takes a swipe at people who may be looking to make the switch to prepaid from a contract based plan with one of the big four industry leaders.

Prepaid has experienced a big surge since the end of last year. It seems that many people are beginning to see that prepaid wireless service can be a very good way to save money. What’s more, with prepaid you don’t have to sign a contract and bind yourself to your cell phone provider, you never have to pay any kind of termination fees, and you have more control over the minutes you buy and use with a prepaid plan like those offered by Tracfone.

Tracfone is one of the top “cheap” or value providers in the prepaid arena–and it’s clear why the company has amassed 12 million subscribers in the United States. Tracfone really does provide value, and the company is clearly looking ahead with this new plan. The Straight Talk Unlimited plan provides Unlimited Nationwide and anytime minutes and texts for 30 days. The price is $45, a really good deal for unlimited cell phone usage. This might be the best prepaid wireless deal out there.

There is another lower Straight Talk plan that costs $30. With this plan, you receive 1,000 minutes of talk time plus 1,000 text or multimedia messages and 30 MB of data. This offer looks even more competitive than the one that costs fifteen dollars more. Both of the plans are valid for 30 days after the purchase and you can set up an auto refill to automatically renew at the end of the cycle to avoid service interruption.

It is conceivable that this type of plan could become very mainstream. If the Straight Talk plans can grow and become successful for Tracfone in tandem with Verizon, then this could be an omen of things to come.  In other words, this could be a game-changer.

These Straight Talk plans are probably the best offerings out there at the moment. Unlimited talk on the Verizon network for something like $80 less than Verizon customers are paying? Sounds like a sweet deal! Bet there are many contract customers thinking about switching.
    I agree, this is a game-changer.

Yeah, both the $30 and the $45 plans look very attractive. I think the Unlimited plan wins out though because you get even more for your money.

That’s great to hear Jess. It’s always nice to create more savings on your phone bill. Straight Talk’s plans are getting very popular with people who want great service and a lot of talk time and texting capability without high rates.

yea I bought a straight talk phone, thinking this is a great deal, it beat the $60 unlimited with at&t well now we must be careful, when i authorized them to take out for my 30 days the 2nd time, they charged me 7 times which made the last 5 of those charges give me overdraft fees. they did remembrance me for the extra 6 charges, the bank said that they were also liable for the nsf fees also, because i would not have received these charges if straight talk had not made their mistake, i talked to straight talk and they said that they would take care of these charges it would take 24-48 hours, well a week went by and nothing… so i called them back and they said no they will not take care of them so I want to let every one know that this company may sound good but watch out. and I will be getting my lawyer to talk with them and i told them that.

I am 16 and currently have ATT’s go phone unlimited for $60 a month. Its a rip off, no internet, nothing. I switched because I want cheap but I want quality. Cricket is cheap but do not have good coverage, loose calls and stuff. Would it be a good idea to switch to straight talk? Would my service still be good or would it be crappy as if I were to have cricket? I don’t have money to waste so your input will be greatly valued by me.

    :-)

  9. Easton LAW says:

Vincent, MetroPCS would be your best bet. I had Sprint for 11years, which is a rip-off, I just switch to MetroPCS at the end of January 2010. It is the best move ever, I truly un-limit myself to nationwide unlimited text talk, and internet for $40 bucks a month. Nothing is better right now. With sprint I pay $55.00 a month and constantly have to watch minutes and getting tex messages from countries overseas like Venezuela that they refuse to credit back to my account. MetroPCS was a breeze, one of the best decisions I make in years. Good Luck!!

Vincent – If you don’t have good Cricket coverage where you live, then it’s probably worthwhile to look into Straight Talk. See if there’s anyone you know who uses it and get their opinion of the service. Also, you can check the coverage map on StraightTalk.com to see where coverage is strongest.
