Cheap Cell Phone Plans: Can MetroPCS Compete with Tracfone, Boost Mobile?

MetroPCs is what you might call an underdog in the prepaid wireless market.  The regional wireless provider is still trying to tread water–and it’s actually shown some moxy with its new $40 unlimited prepaid plan.

The plan comes with unlimited talk time, text messages, and data.  What MetroPCS basically did is shave five bucks off each of its prepaid plans.

As prices in the prepaid market seem to spiral down, you can’t help but wonder where they will bottom out.  I’m sure they are pretty close to the lowest they will go–let’s be honest, these people are trying to run businesses.  They’re no dummies.

Prepaid wireless companies like Tracfone, Boost Mobile, Cricket, and MetroPCs must know that as the limbo bar gets closer to the ground, everyone loses.  There’s only so low you can go.  At this point, the consumer benefits, but soon down the road, as prepaid providers provide more service for increasingly small margins, the service will have to get worse.  Isn’t that how it works.

Or it could be that all this talk of prepaid “price wars” is not as intense as it really seems. Like I wrote above, these providers are businesses.  For now, if you’re looking for a cheap cell phone plan, they are ripe for the picking.
