Since the beginning of this year, the market for prepaid phones and plans has truly heated up. There seems to have been a new announcement in prepaid every single week.
Either it was the announcement of a new unlimited prepaid plan from Straight Talk or a new service added to an existing plan from MetroPCS. It’s no surprise then, considering how “mainstream” prepaid has gone, that more smartphones would be made available on pay as you go plans.
What has traditionally been seen as the frugal cell phone option–which makes sense since prepaid can actually save customers a ton of money–has just been given a slight make over. A new audience may be interested in prepaid options now that more high-tech highly-functioning smartphones are available on prepaid phone plans.
Not too long ago, T-Mobile unveiled its prepaid BlackBerry plans. As time goes by, many more handsets will be available on prepaid plans. It’s just the way the market seems to be going. Why not give consumers the option?
New Phones
Straight Talk will be releasing the Samsung R810C “Finesse,” (pictured above) which is similar in style to the iPhone, complete with its own apps, 2 MP camera, and full keyboard. Clearly, this is not your penny-pinching grandma’s phone–or maybe it is. Consumers are becoming savvier and want good service and high-quality phones at a good price.
Verizon is starting to unleash some higher tech phones as well. The Samsung Intensity is a step in the right direction.
Press Release from NMRC which is about the changing climate of the prepaid market and how high tech devices may help increase adoption of pre-paid plans.
