Straight Talk recently unveiled its first ever Android prepaid phone. It’s called the Samsung Precedent and runs on the Straight Talk unlimited plan. One of the most exciting things happening in the wireless industry is that prepaid plans are becoming really low-priced. This is a great thing because it means there is more competition, which means the deals are only going to get hotter.
Another exciting thing that’s going on in the pay as you go market (or prepaid) as it becomes more mainstream is phone selection is getting better and better. In a short while, we will see more smartphones that have traditionally been on contract plans move to prepaid.
It’s great–more selection means more customization and more options, which is always a good thing.
I wonder if we will ever see a prepaid iPhone. That would be interesting to see. What would the data plan be like? For now, two of the big smartphones on prepaid plans are Straight Talk’s Samsung Finesse and the BlackBerry curve on T-Mobile’s flexpay.
It’s true that the thing people are looking for with prepaid is low cost. But when low cost and better phone selection come together in one package, it will be a good thing for customers.
