Prepaid Phones Go High-Tech, Adding More Smartphones

samsung-finessSince the beginning of this year, the market for prepaid phones and plans has truly heated up.  There seems to have been a new announcement in prepaid every single week.

Either it was the announcement of a new unlimited prepaid plan from Straight Talk or a new service added to an existing plan from MetroPCS.  It’s no surprise then, considering how “mainstream” prepaid has gone, that more smartphones would be made available on pay as you go plans.

What has traditionally been seen as the frugal cell phone option–which makes sense since prepaid can actually save customers a ton of money–has just been given a slight make over.  A new audience may be interested in prepaid options now that more high-tech highly-functioning smartphones are available on prepaid phone plans.

Not too long ago, T-Mobile unveiled its prepaid BlackBerry plans.  As time goes by, many more handsets will be available on prepaid plans.  It’s just the way the market seems to be going.  Why not give consumers the option?

New Phones

Straight Talk will be releasing the Samsung R810C “Finesse,” (pictured above) which is similar in style to the iPhone, complete with its own apps, 2 MP camera, and full keyboard.  Clearly, this is not your penny-pinching grandma’s phone–or maybe it is.  Consumers are becoming savvier and want good service and high-quality phones at a good price.

Verizon is starting to unleash some higher tech phones as well.  The Samsung Intensity is a step in the right direction.

Press Release from NMRC which is about the changing climate of the prepaid market and how high tech devices may help increase adoption of pre-paid plans.

T-Mobile’s New Cell Phone Releases

The new holiday lineup for T-Mobile includes the following phones.

Google Android MyTouch 3G
Samsung Behold II
Motorola Cliq, of course
T-Mobile Tap
Nokia 3711
The new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is available in white.

The Nokia 3711, one of the new ones this year is your basic clamshell phone, but it supports T-Mobile’s 3G network and Web2Go, the web access and browsing component. It also boasts a 2 MP camera.

T-Mobile Tap is for people who live online and need to be connected while on the go. If you want easy access to all kinds of apps, this phone is for you.

This is not a bad lineup for T-Mobile, which also made some headlines recently due to the news about T-Mobile’s “Project Dark,” which is seen as a threat or at least a competitor in the prepaid phone market.

T-Mobile Pushes FlexPay ‘Prepaid’ Plans

t-mobile-even-more-plusplan
The new T-Mobile plans that arose from the much talked about project dark have been released.  These plans are “premium” prepaid plans, even though the FlexPay plans aren’t explicitly referred to as such.  They are prepaid though, since users will be purchasing a phone and paying for it over a number of months–as low as four, as high as twenty.

This is the “flexpay” part of the program, which allows subscribers to pay for their phone over a chosen period of time with 0% interest.  Essentially, this ties a user to the service in much the same way a contract does, meaning that if you drop the plan, you still have to pay for the phone.

T-Mobile is working with knowledge that many people are used to the “new every two” plans wherein they get a new or heavily discounted phone and is betting that many people will jump at the chance to get a high quality cell phone up front for small monthly payments factored into their bill.

T-Mobile’s ad budget should also help attract users to these plans and maybe eclipse Sprint at the number 3 carrier in the country.

All plans include:

nationwide 3G network

T-Mobile to T-Mobile calling in-network

Free nights and weekends

Free Whenever minutes to use at discretion

The T-Mobile Even More plan requires no annual contract.  There is an unlimited plan available, which costs $49.99 to start, and quickly bounces up to $59.99 if you add text messaging.  The 1,000 minutes plan retails for ten bucks cheaper and is a better deal for moderate cell phone users out there.  There is also a family plan, which goes for $99 (for unlimited talk and text).

The “Even More Plus” plan requires a two-year contract plan, with the unlimited plan costing $59.99 per month.  See more at T-Mobile.
